Social Media Safety Guide

Please remember that social media is actively used by fraudsters and ill-wishers to illegally obtain your money or harm you and your family. Your safety largely depends on you! When communicating on social media, it is important to follow a number of rules, which are outlined below.

Safety Rules in Private Correspondence

A Stranger Contacts You, Claiming to Be a Friend or Relative
Scammers may use someone else's photo, a hacked account, or even fake voices and videos using neural networks.
What should raise suspicion:
Urgency and panic. They will rush you to prevent you from thinking clearly.
Example
"Zlata, hi! It's your mom. Your dad and I have been arrested by the police, we need money urgently, right now. They took our phones and only gave us this number."
Unusual request
You are asked to urgently transfer money, provide an SMS code, or click on a link.
Unusual communication style
For instance, a friend suddenly addresses you formally: "Greetings, Pavel," when they always used to write "Hi."
Someone claiming to be an official
A stranger claims to be a police officer or government employee.
Remember
real officials never demand money or codes via social media or phone calls.

Your actions

Don't panic and don't rush. Take a pause.
Contact the person through a trusted channel. Call them on their regular number, write to their old account, or meet them in person if possible (at the university, dormitory).
Consult with others. Tell mutual friends or relatives about the situation. Deception is often easier to spot from the outside.
Try asking a personal question (with caution). You can ask about a fact only the two of you would know. But remember: scammers study your social media and might know your dog's name (from a photo on a collar), your brother's age (from a birthday photo), or your full name (from a photo of a diploma).

If a "Sechenov University Employee" Contacts You

We do sometimes need to request information urgently. To distinguish us from scammers, follow these instructions
Check your email.
In most cases, we will first contact you via email. Regularly check the email address listed in your personal account.
If you receive a call or a message on social media:
  • Ask for and write down the caller's full name.
  • Tell them you will send the requested information to their official email address (scammers usually start making excuses).
  • Find this employee on the official website www.sechenov.ru and verify their email address..
  • Send the required information only to that confirmed official address.
If in doubt, contact us directly or through your class monitor.
Write an email to your designated specialist (explain the situation: who contacted you and what they asked for)

Safety in Group Chats

Be careful when communicating in chats you did not create
Review the participant list
  • If there is even one person you do not know in the chat, never send personal information, contacts, or scanned documents there.
Control the chat's composition
  • Do not add outsiders to student chats: relatives, volunteers, students from other universities, or individuals claiming to be embassy or police officials.
  • Any of these could be a scammer in disguise.
  • Do not publish links to chats in public places — they could be used by malicious actors to add bots.
For any questions related to fraud or illegal activities, please contact the Directorate of the Institute of International Education.
