A Guide to Moscow Libraries

The Moscow library system is a vast network of over 400 modern libraries, offering millions of books, free Wi-Fi, computers, and a rich cultural life. Here is everything you need to know to start using them.

The Unified Library Card – Your Key to All Libraries

This is the main reader's document. A single plastic or electronic card grants you access to all Moscow libraries
How to get one?
  • Online: The fastest way is to apply on the mos.ru portal. You will receive an electronic version of the card immediately.
  • In person: Visit any library with your passport (and migration card/visa). A plastic card will be issued on the spot, on the same day.
Do I need a Moscow registration (propiska)?
  • No. Moscow registration is not required. The card is available to everyone, including foreign citizens.
What if the card is lost?
  • Go to any library with your passport, and you will receive a free duplicate.

How to Search and Order Books

Use the convenient online service — "Biblioteki Moskvy" (Moscow Libraries) (linked to the mos.ru portal)
Search
Find the book you need in the electronic catalog on the website
Reservation
Select the book and the library where it's convenient for you to pick it up. Log in using your mos.ru account and your library card number
Pick-up
Within 3-7 days, the book will be waiting for you at the chosen library. You will receive a notification. You can pick it up within 3 days
Important: You can reserve and have checked out no more than 15 books at a time

Rules of Use and Deadlines

Loan Period:
Books are issued for 30 days. You can extend the deadline online via the "Moscow Libraries" service if there is no waiting list for the book.
What you can do in the library:
  • Use free Wi-Fi, computers, and workspaces with power outlets.
  • Read and work in quiet reading rooms.
  • Attend numerous free events: lectures, workshops, meetings with writers, and interest clubs.
  • Get free access to electronic libraries (LitRes, National Electronic Library) and legal databases.
What you cannot do (basic rules):
  • Use someone else's library card or lend your card to anyone.
  • Make notes in books, fold pages, or damage them.
  • Take literature out without checking it out at the lending desk.
  • Disturb the quiet: no loud talking or disturbing other visitors.
  • Be in outdoor clothing or have an unkempt appearance.

How to borrow a book
  • Hold your Unified Library Card up to the scanner, sel ect a book fr om the on-screen catalog, and receive it
How to return
  • Books can only be returned to the same knigomat from which they were borrowed. The loan period is the same 30 days.

What to Do If You Forget Your Card?

No problem! You can:

Show your passport to the librarian
Show the electronic version of the card in your personal account on mos.ru
Use your Muscovite Card (Карта москвича) or "Moskvyonok" card if you have linked your library card to it in advance
