International students have the right to take an academic leave of absence if there are valid reasons
Medical conditions (health issues)
Family circumstances
Other objective reasons preventing continuation of studies
Important: An academic leave can be taken an unlimited number of times, but each leave must not exceed 2 years.

How to Apply for an Academic Leave

Submit an application
Log in to your Personal Account on the University website.
Go to the “Applications” section.
Select “Academic Leave”.
Fill in the required fields:
  • State the reason for the leave.
  • Attach supporting documents (if available).
  • Indicate the start and end dates of your leave.
Date requirements
Start date: no earlier than 3 days after the application submission date.
End date:
  • For applications submitted in spring: no earlier than January 31 of the following year.
  • For applications submitted in autumn: no earlier than August 31 of the following year.
Attention: Applications with incorrect dates will be automatically rejected. A rejection notice will be sent to your email.

Special Conditions for International Students

Visa issues

Important: When taking an academic leave, your study visa is annulled. 

You must:
  • Leave the territory of Russia within the established time frame.
  • After the leave, apply for a new invitation for entry.
  • Obtain a new study visa to return to your studies.
Financial issues
  • Tuition fees are not charged during the academic leave.
  • Funds already paid will be carried over to your next payment.
  • Your contract number remains unchanged.
Study Process During Academic Leave
  • No class or exam dates are assigned to you.
  • You are not required to attend classes.
  • All grades received before the leave are retained.

Completion of Academic Leave

Standard completion:
The academic leave ends automatically on the date you specified.
Early completion:
To return earlier:
  • Submit an application in the “Applications” section of your Personal Account.
  • Do this no earlier than 14 days before your intended return date.
  • Wait for confirmation.

After Returning from Academic Leave

Study process
You return to the same year of study you were in before the leave.You must:
  • Attend classes in current subjects.
  • Pass assessments in subjects where grades were not received.
  • Adapt to the current curriculum.
Financial obligations
  • Pay tuition, taking into account funds already on your account.
  • If necessary, apply for a new study visa.
Important Warnings
  • Carefully study the missed material – if returning early, make sure you can catch up on skipped classes.
  • Check the current curriculum – programs may change during your absence.
  • Comply with visa regulations – make sure to process all necessary documents for re-entry on time.
